ShipClassifications
Human/Terran ship naming convention
Humans on earth use a class system to name the ships size and capacity
When a new ship class is commissioned it will generally begin with 1 or A and continue in sequential order (exceptions exist). Depending on the ship maker, the style, body, and extra features can be wildly different. Ship makers are only required to design their ships to hit minimum requirements for the class.
Cargo Ship Classes:
S Class – a super heavy cargo ship which can carry 1000 Tons, can also be unmanned. This is often one of the most expensive ships to launch/land and is usually owned by wealthy companies and government space-agencies. It is uncommon that a colony in space would need this much cargo at a single time making them exceedingly rare. S Class are to large to use the space lanes often used by “truckers”. Also S Class are often outfitted with stealth and military grade weaponry technology to protect from pirates/maurauders. Several smaller ships linked together like a train can also be considered an S-Class though also making them a prime target for pirates/marauders.
A Class – a heavy cargo ship which can carry a maximum payload 500 tons, also can be unmanned. These are more often seen class of ship which is used for major resupply missions or “trucking” resources. Companies or private owners often own ships of these size to make their living. Since the space lanes are often filled with them, this adds a layer of individual security against pirates/marauders.
B Class – Medium cargo ship which can carry a maximum payload of 250 tons and can be unmanned. Often used by companies for routine monthly supply missions to colonies, or for private use in trading goods/services or in transporting a number of people to a destination.
Civilian ship classes:
P Class – Often used for fast, single seat ships with small amount of cargo
Q Class -
R Class - Large multiple seat ships or can be used for large (for civilian) cargo
